Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
